Livermore's best hair stylist says,"There is more to having your hair done than a good shampoo and shorter hair."

Great hair stylists understand that they are creating an interpretation of how the client wants to feel when he or she looks into a mirror.

Why can't I find soomeone who will give me a good hair cut??

Unfortunately I hear this question on almost a daily basis, as clients try to find someone who can really cut their hair so it not only looks good in the salon, but is workable at home also.

My answer to this question is not a positive one. To be sure there are good and talented stylists out there, but often it is the person who barely graduated high school that chooses the beauty industry. Many do not understand that to be successful in this industry one must work long hours, have great customer service skills, be creative and have good common sense. These attributes are not easily found in one person. Too often people who attend beauty school like to play with hair, but do not really want to work hard to achieve success.

Add to this the fact that in the last ten years the Government has established subsidized programs that allow beauty schools to collect money based on the number of students attending, but do not focus on turning out well trained graduates. Therefore the industry is overloaded undertrained "professionals" that can only find jobs at franchised salons that pay barely minimum wage. If a prospective talent wants to really make a career of hairstyling he or she will have to start at a salon-spa as an assistant and work to become a designer. However, even designer level hair stylists do not usually make really good money and become frustrated fast. Therefore once a stylist gains the skills necessary to make a good living in this business, he or she will usually leave the salon-spa and either open their own salon or rent a chair.

Having owned a salon for over 12 years I can tell you this is also a frustrating career move, because it puts the stylist in the position to have to find good stylists to help cover overhead and hopefully make some profit for the owner, which is a repeat of the original dilemma. Many salon owners throw in the towel and rent chairs as I have. Finally I can do my job, control my income, and enjoy the people I create great looks with. For this reason my advice is if you want a great hair cut/style, give up chain salons and salonspas, find someone who really likes the work and has talent-then stay with them because they are not easy to find!
